They’re getting younger and younger and the competition is tough! This day and age, parents are grooming their children to become star athletes and they’re starting at a very young age. Tiny 5th grader Julian Newman is the starting point guard…yeah you heard me, STARTING point guard on Downey Christian high school’s VARSITY basketball team in Orlando Florida! Right now, the 4’5 standout is averaging 12.4 points, 11 assists, and 4.3 steals per game. Not bad for an 11 year old right? How is Julian able to play you ask? Well Downey Christian is an independently operated school and is out of jurisdiction of the FHSAA. So it is not against policy for him to play.
“He has tremendous skill level,” Julian’s father Jamie told Max Preps. “He has moves that even NBA players don’t have. He does stuff that has never been done before with the ball”
Whoa Papa! Pump your breaks a little. He is only 11 years old! Could Jamie Newman be a little partial because its his son AND he is the head coach of the team? Either way, I must say that little Julian is indeed talented and if he keeps it up he will no doubt be a superstar. Check out the video below of Julian’s handles and check out his profile on Max Preps website. Werk Julian!!
